Seated Woman

Sculpture
Building "B"
Fuad Bakikhanov’s Seated Woman is a compact yet monumental sculptural work. Its simplified forms, generalized features, and calm composition convey the figure’s composure, inner integrity, and maternal character.

Historical Context

Throughout the history of Azerbaijani sculpture, the female figure has served as one of the principal artistic symbols of national identity, family values, and the continuity of life. During the second half of the twentieth century, sculptors increasingly created generalized female images that transcended portraiture, expressing universal ideals of motherhood, spiritual strength, and the cultural values of the Azerbaijani people.

Cultural/Artistic Inspiration

The sculpture harmoniously combines decorative stylization with emotional expressiveness. By preserving the natural rough texture of the stone, the artist imbues the work with a sense of authenticity and an archaic character. Rather than portraying a specific individual, Bakikhanov presents the female figure as a universal artistic symbol embodying the continuity of life, fertility, and the spiritual and cultural values of the nation.
