Historical Context

Akif Asgarov’s “Mirza Alakbar Sabir” is a remarkable sculptural portrait dedicated to one of Azerbaijan’s most prominent satirical poets. The composition depicts Sabir in a seated position. His body leans slightly forward, his hands are clasped over his knees, and his downward gaze conveys contemplation, restraint, and inner strength. Akif Izzatulla oghlu Asgarov was born on 1 May 1940 in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. From 1958 to 1963, he studied at the Azim Azimzade State Art School, and from 1963 to 1969 he continued his education in the studio of Mikhail K. Anikushin in Leningrad (present-day Saint Petersburg). The principal focus of Akif Asgarov’s artistic career was easel and monumental sculpture. He participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. His solo exhibitions were held in Baku in 1997 and Berlin in 2009. His works are featured in the permanent collections of museums in Azerbaijan and abroad. They are also held in private collections in France, Germany, the United States, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. From 2001 to 2011, he served as the Director of the Azerbaijan State College of Fine Arts. Beginning in 2011, he worked as a Professor at the Department of Sculpture of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts. Akif Asgarov was awarded the honorary titles of Honoured Art Worker of the Republic of Azerbaijan and People’s Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On 30 April 2020, he was decorated with the 2nd Degree Labour Order. Akif Asgarov passed away on 18 November 2023.
